Irish Indian

Bio

Kelly Bates-Schroeder

Irish Indian is a name my mother, Sherah Whitaker/Bates/Cole came up with in the 80's. I created the logo for her and then started using it myself. The actual image of the little girl's face came from a photo of her when she was a child. Though she will not admit to being an artist, she definitely is one.

I’ve always had a dual creative nature, art and dance. I’m not sure which one takes precedence over the other; they seem to both be innate. My artistic training started with Patricia Poutier’ in high school, on to SFA and then SHSU for a BFA & certified K12, a Commercial Art Degree from Art Institute of Houston, and a Masters of Technology Communications from Grand Canyon University.

I was hired straight out of college as an art teacher at Paul Revere, where I ran the artistic end of a children’s theater for 8 years. I was co-directing while teaching set design, audio and lighting tech, prop building, and choreographing dance scenes. This later fit naturally into the partnership with Interchange.

Dance training started with Patsy Swayze, who taught my mother when she was a girl. I even had lessons with her son Patrick. I was in the drill team throughout HS and Drill Major for two years. I did a bit of gymnastics on a college team, and joined Several Dancers Core; a modern dance company in the early 80's. After working several years with the Core, I became too involved with Interchange. So I had to get any dancing needs fulfilled while working with the various bands. This turned out alright by me!

Photography, though always an interest when I was young, didn’t get off the ground until I started photographing the bands while working with Interchange. Unless otherwise specified, the photography on the Interchange site was done by me.

Over the years I’ve worked with Interchange as set, lighting, and sound tech. I've even been the head roadie, ticket taker, bouncer, beer remover (from speakers, which seems to be a favorite place for drunks to put them), as well as the secretary, art director, and now web master.

Currently, my paintings and works of art can be purchased from 'A Different Touch', a gift and home accessories shop found in Gentry Square, in Old Town Spring, Texas. I have quite a few paintings, drawings, photographs, and crafts in this shop. I work festivals in the Fall and Spring, and design home environments.

Fairly interesting and involved work, I’d have to say. I hope you enjoy both the Interchange and my personal site.
