Once Upon a Time .....

History of Interchange Records

Interchange Records was initially formed as Freeway Records of Houston, Texas, releasing several vinyl records of original music bands in the early 1980’s. Even after securing the U.S. federal trademark for Freeway Records from the USPTO, it was later discovered that another Freeway Records was in existence in California. So, with the help of lawyer Casey Kiernan (pianist on Garret’s Lack of Sleep –LP), the situation was researched and pursued, only to find out that the West Coast's Freeway Records had secured it’s federal mark four months earlier than the Houston Freeway Records. This type of situation happened often back in days of pre-Internet, as trademark searches took many months to research and secure. Therefore, after sorting things out, the Texas Freeway Records label did not want to continue with the Freeway name, even after having officially-secured, and also paid for, the filing of the registered U.S. trademark. That was part of the difficulty in those earlier years of trademarking, with federal trademark searching and associated holding periods; and therefore both record companies received official status of Trademark granted from the USPTO. In turn, the Texans pulled up their boot straps, and decided then to change their label's name to Interchange Records, and once again went through the entire trademark process. After reflecting on the change of name situation, it seemed to be a better name to promote modern/new music with; and that's when the label was officially reborn as 'Interchange Records'. In 1988, along with continuing the affiliate offices in Texas, Interchange Records relocated it's headquarters to the bustling music city of Atlanta, GA. And, Interchange music business is currently continuing to be dual-based from Atlanta, GA and Houston, TX.
